Popular Committee of the World Cup, a group that questions violations of the mega event, held a public shaming of José Maria Marin in his house in São Paulo this morning
On this Friday 6th, with six days remaining for the opening of the World Cup in Brazil, the Popular Committee of the World Cup São Paulo performed an “esculacho popular” or public shaming of José Maria Marin in front of his house in SP.
Currently, José Maria Marin is president of Brazil’s National Football Confederation and of Local Organising Committee, a group that represents Fifa in Brazil.
The activity sought to expose FIFA, the government and construction companies as responsible for the death of ten workers on the construction sites of the World Cup stadiums.
The group held a funeral in tribute to the workers with flowers and candles. Also, there were a theater and artistic performance denominated “Inauguration of the World Cup of Deaths” accompanied the protest, in which the deaths of construction workers were staged. Figures such as Uncle Sam and businessmen of FIFA and the construction company Odebrecht (which built the World Cup stadium in São Paulo) cut a ribbon in order to inaugurate the deaths and human rights violations committed in the context of the World Cup.
The streets around his house, in a very posh neighborhood, were covered with posters depicting the worker’s faces and in which is written “The World Cup of Deaths”.
The group demands a proper compensation for the dead workers’ families for the wrongful death of their family member.
In São Paulo the construction company Odebrecht is responsible for three deaths on the construction site of the Itaquerão soccer stadium, where the opening of the World Cup will be held. Fábio Luiz Pereira and Ronaldo Oliveira dos Santos died in November 2013, burried underneath a construction crane. In March 2014, Fábio Hamilton da Cruz died after falling from the provisional stands he was working on.
